The FARA 500 Sebring race weekend
The FARA 500 Sebring race weekend 11th – 12th of July was another triumph for the Gryphon Racing team. After winning pole position in Saturday's qualifier, Gryphon Racing finished 1st in its FP-1 class and 2nd overall.
After a 15 minute qualifying, Danny van Dongen put the Gryphon R1 Turbo on pole position. Robert Haub started the race on Sunday and instantly took control of the lead. Despite the many safety car situations, the race went quite smoothly. Just under the hour Robert came in for his first planned pit stop to refuel the car. After his stop, he was able to regain the first place in the race. The team had planned a driver change for the second pit stop, but just after the drivers had changed, race control decided to neutralise the race because rain and thunder were heading their way. The race was neutralised for about 40 minutes, after which it was up to Danny to bring the car home safely. Just after the neutralisation, the team decided to fuel the car up completely and mount the rain tyres. It seemed to be the right choice at the time, however the track started drying up quickly, putting those who had chosen rain tyres in a disadvantage. With just 40 minutes left, Danny had to survive on his rain tyres and get the car to the finish line. After a race with such different circumstances, the team can be proud to take home second place overall and first place in the class. On top, the team managed to score enough points to surpass everyone else and now leads the standings for the championship. This race was made possible by the new Gryphon team sponsor: Ernst Benz, precision instruments for timekeeping.
The team looks forward to the next race which will take place on the 22th and 23th of August on the Miami Homestead Raceway.
